What is Cultural Revolution?
In 1966, Chairman Mao Zedong launched the Cultural Revolution, fully known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution that lasted from 1966 to 1976. The main intention of the Cultural Revolution was to throw away the old customs and make everyone equal by denying capitalism, though later, Mao took over the country. However in 1976, the Cultural Revolution ended by the death of Chairman Mao. China immediately started to reform under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping after Mao Zedong died. |

"As China’s future, you must also have communist beliefs. I, and my colleagues, are willing to take full responsibility for instilling within you our communists beliefs. As communists, we believe all are equal. All wealth should be dispersed equally, all land should be dispersed equally, all food should be dispersed equally. No one should be smarter than another, no one should be richer than another, we should all be equals."
--Mao, Zedong. Speech made in 1966
what was the purpose of the cultural revolution?
|
Chairman Mao Zedong started the Cultural Revolution to eradicate the four "old"s, which were the old cultures, old customs, old habits, and old ideas. Mao Zedong said that he wanted to form a communistic China where everyone would share his or her fortune to create a better country. He eliminated the intellectuals and capitalists like major educators, politicians, and leaders."Dare to rebel against authority," he said. By doing so, Mao was confident that no one would point out mistakes of his theory and he would become the monarchy of the country. |
"I became a Red Guard in July and ever since I have had a great sense of pride in myself. I finally feel like I’m doing something good for myself and for our country. At first the police were interfering with our necessary work, but great Chairman Mao has seen that we mean good. As you’ve probably heard, he just announced that he supports the Red Guards on August first. Now we can destroy the Four Olds and create the Four News without interruption..."
